November Budget Checklist

It’s the last Thursday of October. Has October flown by to anybody else? I feel like I say that every month, but now that we’ve already had snow where I live and the holidays are only weeks away, it seems I blinked and October was over.

It’s the start of a new month, so today I’m putting together a budget checklist. If you’re like me, you’ll find November to be one of the craziest and most expensive of the year. Below are some things you might want to remember to add to your budget for this exciting month ahead.

Snow Tires

Do you live in a high probability snow zone? If so, you might want to think about exchanging your current tires for snow tires. I know these can be expensive, but they might be worth it if you find yourself slipping down hills and your commute is glazed with ice. If you think you might need them, now’s a good time to fit this category into your budget.

Christmas Gift Shopping

No surprise here. We’ve been talking about this every month since August. Black Friday is closing in and gift sales are hot. If you haven’t already, set aside some cash for gifts. I’d even suggest setting aside a little extra than you normally would for the people in your life that may have (unintentionally) slipped your mind or the unexpected gift exchange.

If you like crafting, set aside money for materials too.

Craft Shows

I mentioned this last month, but craft shows are a fall favorite for some. It seems that all the shows in my area fall on the same weekend every year. I’ve said it before, but plan on saving some money for purchases and a possible entrance fee.

Upped Utilities

It’s getting colder up here in Michigan. We’ve even had a couple days of intense snow, including a day where it actually stuck to the ground overnight. You might be living somewhere warmer than I, but don’t let an unexpected heat bill derail your budget. If you have the ability to know the balance due before the month begins, then that’s ideal, but if you’re billed midway through the month, be generous and beef up that line item if you know that the heat’s been used more frequently.

Thanksgiving Prep

Again, Thanksgiving is no surprise to anyone in November, but  the cost of prep and entertaining essentials might. And if you’re a guest, plan to bring something to share. After all, Thanksgiving is about sharing and expressing gratitude for the people in our lives and the possessions we’ve been given.

Travel Expenses

Are you meeting up with family or friends and the trip requires lengthy travel? If you plan to hit the road, plan for extra gas expenses, and if you’re taking flight, plan for the plane cost and extras like a snack at the airport. Be prepared if something doesn’t go according to plan, like you’re stranded because the plane has delayed for maintenance and it’s time for dinner, or toll roads become a part of the directions. You never know what could happen, but with a cushion, you don’t have to stress more than you normally would.

Christmas Kickoff Tradition

Does your city or a neighboring town hold a Christmas kickoff parade, meet and greet with Santa, or a lighting of a Christmas tree to signify the beginning of the Christmas season? If so and you plan to attend, enjoy! And plan ahead to splurge on hot chocolate (if it’s not already provided) and other sweet treats.

Snow Removal Equipment

Is your snow removal equipment in need of an upgrade? If you haven’t already set up a sinking fund for some of the larger items, budget for new items (if needed) like shovels or a snow plow. If you live in a community that takes care of it for you, that’s awesome. But maybe you hire out someone to come plow your drive-way once or twice a week. Work that into your budget if you’re in that boat.

Winter Gear

Do you need snow pants, winter boots, hats, gloves, or a better fitting warm coat? Have the kids grown out of their winter apparel they fit into nicely last year? If yes, then plan for stocking up on cold weather essentials. You might hit some stellar deals as we approach Black Friday, but even if you’ve missed the discounts and you’re paying full price, work it into your budget before it gets too bitter cold outside.

Donations

Are you planning on helping a family in need or donating to a cause that is special to you this month? It is such a blessing to help others all year round, but in particular during the holidays when it can be especially difficult for some families. If you plan to give, and I hope we all do, then work that into your budget. Giving might end up being more valuable to you than it is to the receiver.

Cheers!
