Zesty Project: Whimsical Wall Décor
Everyone knows, subtle changes made to your living space can totally transform its vibe. A hung photograph, shrubbery, a cozy throw blanket, every little detail makes a tremendous difference in the story you are telling in your space.
My living room has recently changed, and with it, my style. I had a clear plan for the blank wall space above my television, and all it took were a few flowers (surprise surprise) and some wall anchors. Keep reading to find out how I created the newest addition to my living room.
I’ve always thought that someday when I get a house I want a backdrop wall. What’s that? Remember when you and your family would get dressed up to get yearly family pictures and the photographer had you arranged in front of a decorative backdrop? Maybe it was a floral scene, perhaps winter, or even just a solid color, but no matter what, you were sitting in front of something.
And maybe you’ve been to a wedding where the couple said their vows beneath a dreamy arbor? I want the fuse of the two ideas as a statement wall in my home. A dedicated whimsical space that is dramatic like a backdrop and unexpected like an arbor. It doesn’t make sense in a house, but for some reason it works beautifully and is even welcomed as a conversation starter. Plus, it would be a lovely space to actually take photos!
This is my dream.
When we moved to our new apartment, I knew I wanted to revamp my style in the living room. I’d been working with gold accents in our previous space and knew I wanted to carry that design here, but add a European vibe. Tuscan wine country or French elegance was what I was aiming for, and both styles, though seemingly drastically different, both had the alluring appeal of natural beauty and rich history.
The backdrop I created takes me to the elegant vineyards of Tuscany and the untamed floral beauty of France. If I had a bigger wall space, you better believe it would have covered the entire wall. This arrangement works for now, but will only expand in the future.
My new wall statement has only added to the style I’m implementing, and it was so easy to make. Here’s how I made it.
First I collected the bulk of my materials from two of my favorite craft stores. I picked up the floral stems from Michael’s and the greenery pieces (the eucalyptus and the hanging boxwood) from Joann Fabrics.
The pretty rose buds I plucked from their stems and cut the lilacs from their’s.
I picked up three sets of curtain rods from Walmart. Each rod came with two wall mounts and corresponding anchors. I also picked up floral wire to attach the stems to the rods.
At first I considered hot-glue-gunning the stems, but then soon realized it would be easier to just attach them to the rod with the wire. After arranging them several times and landing on the layout I wanted, I started wiring them to the frame.
I had some leftover twine in my craft bin and used it to attach the horizontal rod to the two vertical ones.
Once everything was in place, my husband anchored the mounts to the wall and screwed the rods into place.
Voila! Here it is, what do you think?
In total, this project cost me approximately $76 (including tax). Rods: 3 at $8.87 Each, Wire: $1.47, Flowers: Approximately $46. Some had been discounted from their original price.
